ABOUT VALLALAR

The ArutperunJothi Ramalinga Adigalar, popularly known as VALLALAR, the Great Munificient, may be regarded as the foremost of the saints and ages of the nineteenth century, considering the heights, widths, depths and intimacies of his integral realisation of the Divine in all the "inmost, inner, outer, and the outermost parts of his being".

This great saint Vallalar established his sathya gnana sabhai (True-knowledge-League) here at Vadalur, to spread his messages.  He named Vadalur as "Uttara-Gnana-Chidambaram" meaning "North Chidambaram of Wisdom".  He started a "Samarasa Sanmagha" for the propagation of his ideal Universal compassion.  A charity house (Dharma Sala) was started to feed the pious and the poor without any caste difference.  It is said that ten thousand people were fed within thee days of its starting.  A school (Samarasa Dharma Padasala) was started to teach students the Arul-Pa.  the "True-Knowledgeable-League" (Satya Gnana Sabha), an auditorium, was established to preach the spiritual ideals equally to all.

"Hail Supreme Light divine! Hail Supreme Grace divine!" (The Tamil version of the Mantra is "Arulperun jyoti! Taniperum Karunai") is the mantra uttered by the thousands of Vallalar devotees in a sweet chorus.

There exists a "JOTHI" or "Sacred Light" which was lighted by Vallalar himself in the Gnana Sabai, is kept lighted till now over 150 years. This "JOTHI" describes GOD IS LIGHT. He has no forms. We cannot see the "JOTHI" on normal days. There are 7 sacred screens which hide "JOTHI". The full "JOTHI" will be revealed on "THAIPOOSAM".

Valllar said that to see GOD (LIGHT) seven things has to be followed. Removing Jealous, Lies, Angriness, Desires from our heart, showing love to all living things, submitting ourselves to god.  Then we can reach GOD.
